Thousands of kites were in the skies over End, Oklahoma, in September 2009 as part of an attempt to break a world record and raise awareness about the power of wind.
The event, W.O.W. Kites Over Enid, attempted to break the Guinness World Record for the most kites in the air at one time. It was also a fundraiser for Enid Habitat for Humanity and held in conjunction with a wind energy forum at Autry Technology Center's Center for Business Development.
Even though the Guinness World Record was not broken, the event featured the most kites in the air at one time in North America.
"It has continued to amaze me how one little idea can continue to grow into total community involvement, excitement and enthusiasm," Stanley Hicks of Enid Habitat for Humanity. "We did this as a fundraiser and to promote wind energy in northwestern Oklahoma. The W.O.W. stands for wheat, oil and wind."
The wind energy forum attracted thirty-seven wind industry executives from fifteen companies.
Enid and Garfield County not only provide a great location for wind generation, but also for manufacturing.
